3rd Ave. Arts' educational initiatives are growing! In 2011 we piloted our

  • Bach to School program. About 120 students from Park Elementary walked to St. Mark's for a rare hands-on experience of three keyboard instruments (organ, harpsichord and piano), the marimba, and the mandolin family. The Bach to School program is an extension of the Durango Bach Festival, March 18-24, 2012

  • Durango Chamber Music Academy. Twenty-two local students ranging from age 6 to 16 had their first taste of playing chamber music in ensembles. Half of these students were on scholarship, thanks to the generosity of many donors. Though envisioned as a summer institute, we now have three student ensembles who have committed to continuing their collaboration through the school year! Our first year maxed out our available space and faculty; for 2012 we will offer the program over two weeks. Details about the 2012 Chamber Music Festival and Chamber Music Academy are available at www.DurangoChamberMusic.com.

During the 2011-2012 school year, 3rd Ave. Arts is also helping pilot the Percussion Experience, in collaboration with Fort Lewis College and the 9-R School District.

The Durango Salsa Festival, a fundraiser for nonprofits that advance multiculturalism in our area, has become a wonderful family affair, with educational offerings in music and dance for adults and children. The 2012 festival is set for September 15, 2012. Save the date! Visit www.DurangoSalsaFestival.com for details as they become available.

Students have several opportunities to perform during the year: the Student Recital on the Durango Bach Festival and during the Durango Chamber Music Academy and Summer Institute. Student groups, including del Alma's Balet Folklórico, also perform ont the Durango Salsa Festival.

We also offered the first of our education programs for adults summer 2011: Care and Feeding of the Mature Singing Voice. Around 40 singers attended a day-long workshop, a dozen choir directors participated in a specially designed session, and nearly 30 students took private lessons with the specialist 3rd Ave. Arts brought in.

We've assembled an amazing education committee to help our programs move forward: Dr. Rochelle Mann, Trina Martin, Danielle Menapace, Dr. Jonathan Latta, Dr. Margaret Coxwell and Sharon Neufeld.
