3rd Ave. Arts' newest educational initiative is the Artists in the Schools program. The primary goal of this program is to encourage the integration of the arts into all areas of the curriculum. Teachers in schools throughout the area will be provided with a directory of artists in all disciplines. Artists, at the request of teachers, will give 50- to 60-minute presentations or lessons in all areas of the arts to students in La Plata County schools.

We are currently in Phase I: Accepting applications from artists in all disciplines to provide artistic experiences in the classroom to students of all ages.

Visit the Artists in the Schools page.

Two programs piloted in 2011 continue to grow:

  • Bach to School program. About 300 students from two elementary schools have walked or been bused to St. Mark's for a rare hands-on experience of three keyboard instruments (organ, harpsichord and piano), the marimba, and other instruments. The Bach to School program is an extension of the Durango Bach Festival, March 17-23, 2013.

  • Durango Chamber Music Academy. Students ranging from age 6 to 16 had their first taste of playing chamber music in ensembles. Many of these students were on scholarship, thanks to generous donors. The program has grown to two weeks in the summer. Details about the 2013 Chamber Music Festival and Chamber Music Academy are available at

For two years, 3rd Ave. Arts held The Durango Salsa Festival, a fundraiser for nonprofits that advance multiculturalism in our area. The festival is a wonderful family affair, with educational offerings in music and dance for adults and children. The festival is not scheduled for 2013; 3rd Ave. Arts is seeking other nonprofit organizations to co-host. Please contact us if you are interested! Visit

Students have several opportunities to perform during the year: the Student Recital on the Durango Bach Festival and during the Durango Chamber Music Academy and Summer Institute. Student groups, including del Alma's Balet Folklórico, have also performed on the Durango Salsa Festival.

We also offered the first of our education programs for adults in 2011: Care and Feeding of the Mature Singing Voice. Around 40 singers attended a day-long workshop, a dozen choir directors participated in a specially designed session, and nearly 30 students took private lessons with the specialist 3rd Ave. Arts brought in.

We've assembled an amazing education committee to help our programs move forward: Dr. Rochelle Mann, Trina Martin, Danielle Menapace, Dr. Jonathan Latta, Dr. Margaret Coxwell and Sharon Neufeld.
